Human Rights Dialogue between Indonesia and Sweden

Indonesia and Sweden will hold the second Bilateral Human Rights Dialogue in Stockholm on 23-24 April 2009. The Indonesian delegation consists of officials from the Government Institutions, Indonesian Ombudsman and representatives from NGOs such as Rehabilitation Center for persons with disabilities, Indonesian Commission on Child Protection and rehabilitation center. While Sweden is represented by Government Institutions, Member or Parliament (Riksdag), and representatives from SIDA, RWI and Handisam.

 

The Dialogue will discuss a number of issues as a follow up to the 1st Dialogue held in Jakarta, Indonesia last year, among others, capacity building for civil society on the rights of Persons with Disabilities and Restorative Justice for Children in Conflict with Law. Other human rights related issues will also be discussed during the Dialogue.

 

The Human Rights Dialogue between the two countries was launched last year by the Foreign Minister of Indonesia, Dr. Hassan Wirajuda, and the Swedish Foreign Minister, Carl Bildt, in Jakarta on 22 April 2008. After the launching, a three day workshop was held jointly to mark the establishment of the Human Rights Dialogue between Indonesia and Sweden.

 

As a result, concrete programs and cooperation on human rights capacity building have been implemented since last year, among others, to improve the facilities for persons with disabilities and Juvenile delinquency as well as scholarship for Indonesians to study humanitarian law in Sweden.

 

During this year Dialogue in Stockholm, the delegation will also visit the national Board of Institutional Care and a special approved home for young persons in Uppsala, where they could learn and share experience on the treatment and care of juvenile offenders in Sweden.

 

Bilateral relations between Indonesia and Sweden has been enhancing during the past two years. Human Rights Dialogue is one of many cooperations between the two countries, which purpose is to exchange experience and increase cooperation to support the efforts in promoting and respecting human rights.
